Chat tags, custom modes, and sound notifications
This update introduces chat tags for multiple groups of conversations in parallel, a redesigned mode system (including custom modes), and improvements to cost visibility, indexing performance, and MCP stability. Built-in modes and custom modes (beta)
Existing built-in modes in Cursor include "Agent" and "Ask", and now support adding custom modes. The "Edit" mode is renamed "Manual" to more accurately reflect its functionality.

tool. It will automatically search the code base when needed. If you want to actively trigger the search, you can directly tell Cursor to "search the code base" using natural language. You can also disable the automatic search function of the "Q&A" mode in the mode menu, so that the mode only uses the context you actively provide.

Custom mode (beta) allows you to combine tools and prompts to create new modes that suit your workflow. Since custom mode can be bound to custom shortcuts, ⌘I is bound to "Smart Agent" mode by default , and ⌘L is used to toggle the sidebar by default. If you unbind ⌘I, it will also be used to toggle the sidebar. Custom mode is currently in beta and can be enabled in "Settings → Features → Chat → Custom Mode".
You can also select the default mode from the settings (Settings → Features → Chat → Default Chat Mode) to set it to your preferred mode or the mode you used most recently.
